MAKE A DONATION TO PAA’S FOOD PANTRY
December 03, 2007
The Polish American Association (PAA) is facing a severe food shortage. A drastic rise in the number of individuals experiencing hunger along with a serious decrease in the amount of food received from the federal government, have caused our main food supplier- a Chicago area food bank- to reduce the amount of food we can receive from them. PAA’s food pantry is now struggling to serve an average of 126 economically-disadvantaged, food insecure families per week despite an 82% reduction in food. The cutbacks also affect PAA’s day shelter which distributes anywhere from 2,160 to 3,100 hot meals and snacks to homeless immigrant Poles each month.

Here are some additional facts you may want to know:

  • Nearly 28% of PAA’s Food Pantry participants are children ages 18 or younger

  • Another 30% of PAA’s Food Pantry participants are seniors

  • Seventy percent of families served at the food pantry and 83% of individuals receiving meals at our day shelter have an annual income of $10,000 or less.

  • Fifty percent of our food pantry clients and 100% of day shelter participants are limited-English-speaking Polish and Eastern European immigrants. The PAA’s food pantry and day shelter are the only programs in the city where they can receive help without their limited English proficiency being a barrier.

You can assist PAA in providing food to those who are less fortunate by donating non-perishable food items such as rice, pasta, beans, powdered milk, canned or dry fruit, and canned vegetables and meat. Donations can be dropped at our main office located at 3834 North Cicero Avenue in Chicago. You can also mail your financial contributions with “FOOD PANTRY” written in the memo area of your check.

For more information contact Malgorzata Cieslak, Director of Development, at (773) 282-8206 extension 315.
